Prof. Leandros Tassiulas
Programme: MSc in ICT Systems Modules: Mobile Communication Networks
Prof. Tassiulas is an expert in the field of computer and communication networks with emphasis on fundamental mathematical models, architectures and protocols of wireless systems, sensor networks, satellite communications as well as service provisioning in the internet. He is a Professor in the University of Thessaly in Greece since 2002. He has held positions at Polytechnic University New York (1991-95), University of Maryland College Park (1995-2001) and the University of Ioannina Greece (1999-2001). He has published over 250 papers in highly recognized IEEE journals and conferences and 2 US patents, while his scientific work has over 10000 citations. He has been an Associate Editor for Communication Networks for IEEE Transactions on Information Theory and an editor for IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. He has also served as a senior member of the technical staff of NASA Center for Satellite and Hybrid Communication Networks, a member of technical staff in IBM TJ Watson Research Center, a consultant in Telesis Technologies Laboratories, an expert witness in patent litigation and an expert evaluator and reviewer for the European Commission.
Prof. Tassiulas has been the principal investigator in several research projects funded by government and industry in USA as well as by European Commission and the Greek Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT). He was the coordinator of the EU FET STREP NET-REFOUND (on network information theory), and currently coordinates the EU STREP N-CRAVE on network coding ap¬proaches for wireless networks, the EU STREP OPNEX on optimization-based wireless network protocol design, the EU FP7 STREP CONECT on Cooperative Networking for High Capacity Transport Architectures, FP7-PEOPLE-2010-IRSES CoopLab on experimentation on wireless cooperative networks and EU FP7 FET STAMINA on solving large-scale network optimization problems that start at 1/1/2011. He, together with his research team, participated in the FP6 STREP WIP, the NoEs NEWCOMM, Euro-NGI and CRUISE and currently participates in the NoEs Euro-NF, TREND and FP7 NanoDataCenter, OneLab2, STAR-TRANS and PURSUIT.
Prof. Tassiulas was also the Greek National Expert on Telecommunications for IST in the 6th Framework Program and member of the Committee on Informatics of the Greek National Council on Research and technology. Prof. Tassiulas is a Fellow of IEEE since 2007 while his research has been recognized by several awards including the inaugural INFOCOM 2007 Achievement Award “For fundamental contributions to resource allocation in communication networks”, an IBM Faculty partnership award in 2000, a Bodosaki Foundation award in 1999 in the field: Applied Science: Theories, Technologies and Applications of Parallel and Distributed Computing Systems, an Office of Naval Research (USA) Young Investigator Award in 1997 for the project: Mobile Radio Network Architectures and Protocols for Reliable Information Transport in Dynamic Environments, an NSF CAREER Award (USA) in 1995 for the project Wireless Access Control for Optimal Spectral Efficiency, the INFOCOM 1994 best paper award for the paper Meeting QOS Requirements in a Cellular Network with Reuse Partitioning and a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Initiation Award in 1992 for the project Resource Allocation Problems in Wireless Communication Networks.
