Assoc. Prof. Nikolaos Michailidis

Dr. Nikolaos Michailidis is Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) and Scientific Associate in the Fraunhofer Project Center Coatings in Manufacturing (PCCM), in the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CE.R.T.H.) and in Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) in Aachen. Since 2008, he is Associate Member of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP).

He received his 5-year Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (1993-1998) and Dr.-Εng. in Mechanical Engineering (1998-2002) from AUTH. Among his scientific interests are included: Thin hard coatings’ production methods and properties characterization / Production engineering / Nanoindentation technology / Materials’ mechanical properties characterization / Design and process analysis by Finite Elements Method (FEM) / Rapid prototyping / Bioengineering / Biomaterials / Production, testing and modelling of metallic foams’ mechanical and thermal properties / Fatigue & stress-corrosion cracking / Life-cycle-assessment / Nanoparticles production.

Various Activities: (1998–) Member of the Union of Mechanical-Electrical Engineers of Northern Greece. (1998–) Member of the Hellenic Union of Mechanical-Electrical Engineers. (1998–) Member of the Balkan Tribological Association. (2001–) Member of the Virtual Tribology Institute (VTI). (2004–2007) Member of the Delegation of the Technical Chamber of Greece (Central Macedonia department). (2004–) Member of the Hellenic Bioengineering Association. (2007–) Member, Association for Hellenic-European Studies. (2007) Member of the Expert Group of the European Technological sub-platform MINAM (Micro- and NanoManufacturing). (2010-) Member of the German Society for Materials Science (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde e.V., DGM). (2011-) Member of the European Aeronautics Science Network, EASN Association. Member of Conference Scientific and Organization Committees. Reviewer in various peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Co-Editor of the 4th Hellenic Conference on Metallic Materials 4-5 November, 2010, Thessaloniki-Greece. Lead Guest Editor: Advances in Tribology, Special Issue: Wear-Related Phenomena in Advanced Materials (2011). Editor: International Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering (IJMSE), Serials Publications (2011 - ).     Editor: Nanomaterials, International Scholarly Research Network (ISRN) (2012-). Lead Guest Editor: Advances in Materials Science and Engineering, Special Issue on Production, Characterization and Applications of Porous Materials (2012). Co-organizer of the symposium on Tribology in Manufacturing in the World Tribology Congress to be held in Torino in September 2013. He has participated in more than 40 national and international research projects (at least in 15 as scientific coordinator).

He has been honoured various National scholarships for his performance as student. In 2004 he was selected from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) for Postdoctoral research. In 2008 he was awarded the Excellency & Innovation Award by the AUTH. He received a Fellowship by the SEW Eurodrive Foundation (Germany) for Visiting Professor in the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (Aachen, Germany) (2008-2009). In 2010 he has been αwarded for his participation in the Advising Committee of the students’ Formula SAE by AUTh and in 2011 as Faculty Advisor for the achievements of the team.

Dr. Michailidis has published more than 350 papers in international Scientific Journals and Conference proceedings (92 in peer reviewed journals). His research work has been cited more than 500, possessing an h-index of 13. He has been granted 7 patents, while he participates in 3 patents pending.
